You know how it goes- the gifts are lovely but ultimately the cardboard box steals the show!

Cardboard boxes have to be up there with the best things to play with as a kid…or an adult. So it goes without saying that this was an opportunity too good to miss.

It all started when Lyle received his new Felder saw. As if this alone was not exciting enough, he soon realised that the packaging it had arrived in would make an amazing building material.

For the next few weeks I spotted Lyle drawing elaborate sketches, then he disappeared into the studio. Next thing we were all given instructions and held various angled pieces of cardboard together. It was hard to tell what it was going to be but when it was eventually flipped onto its side it all became clear.

The main body and the stairs of the ‘chicken house’ have been made using the saw cardboard and it is all supported on a pine frame and legs. The stairs are even made from the same cardboard. It also fits the slide from our Pickler’s triangle and the kids can draw on it to make it their own.

It has been tested thoroughly and we reckon it can hold up to 6 children or 2 adults. It has already provided endless fun and reminds us yet again that kids thrive in unstructured play environments and that a cardboard box really is the ultimate gift.
